Catapano Dairy Farm is a Small, family run goat dairy in Peconic specializing in hand crafted artisan cheeses and a variety of beauty products. Kids love to pet and watch the goats play while the adults can sample the chevre, feta, ricotta, gouda, yogurt, and fudge in the little store.
An inspiring success story, Karen and Michael Catapano started their business knowing little about making cheese or even raising goats, but have certainly done a lot of things right. After only 10 years they have racked up a long list of accolades (including 2005 best chevre), and often have a hard time keeping up with the demand for their delicious cheese. Light, yet creamy and rich in flavor, the chevre alone is worth making the trip. Add fresh herbs or honey and spread on a nice crusty bread (Blue Duck Bakery only a few miles away) and it’s lunch!
The Catapano’s believe that the most important part of making good cheese is having well fed, stress free goats. This happy herd sticks to a regular blend of oats barley and various grains keeping the milk’s flavor consistent (variety in vegetation or diet can change the taste of the milk quite dramatically), making the cheese a favorite among local chefs and restaurants who rely on the specific flavors of each.
Located on the North Road just seconds from Sang Lee Farm, a stop at both makes for a stuffed picnic basket full of delicious local goodness!
